Creating A More Sustainable Food System

From farm to fork, Baldor touches every aspect of the food supply chain. As one of the largest importers and distributors of fresh produce and specialty foods in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region, Baldor has a responsibility to lead the way to a more sustainable food system. We strive to actively engage with our growers, shippers, and customers to develop a food supply chain that optimizes environmental and social best practices. We also find ways to continuously improve our own operations, implementing innovative solutions to minimize our environmental impact.

Sustainable Product Line

  • Forty percent of all produce in the United States ends up in a landfill. Baldor's SparCs Program (scraps spelled backwards) is our creative solution to eliminating food waste in our Fresh Cuts Operations. Instead of throwing fruit and vegetable peels, cores, and tops in the landfill, we capture and repurpose this perfectly usable and nutritious produce. SparCs are great for juicing, making broths, soups, and sauces, or adding to baked goods. We currently work with MisFit Juicery and Haven's Kitchen, who utilize SparCs in a variety of innovative ways.

  • Every week we send roughly 30,000 pounds of SparCs to farms across the tristate area. Instead of feeding animals an entirely corn and soy based diet, SparCs provides animals with a highly nutritious supplement to traditional feed.   • Imperfect Produce is Baldor’s way of redefining what constitutes usable produce. One in five fruits and vegetables never make it off the farm because they fail to meet artificial standards of attractiveness. A slight difference in shape or size is what keeps produce in the field rather than on someone’s plate. We work with farmers to capture this imperfect produce and get it into the hands of chefs. Improve the efficiency of our operations and drive industry change from farm to fork.

  • At Baldor, we are working towards sending zero organics to landfill. In 2016, we eliminated food waste from our processing facility, Fresh Cuts. We found a way to divert 100 percent of this excess food product, what we call SparCs (scraps spelled backwards), and get it into the hands of chefs to be repurposed or sent to farms across the tri-state area to be used for animal feed. Now we are ready to take this a step further and capture post-consumer organic waste from our offices and cafeteria and turn it into compost. Additionally, we developed comprehensive recycling programs in our offices and warehouse to ensure metal, plastics, glass, and paper products are properly sorted and kept out of the landfill.

  • With a fleet of nearly 300 trucks and over 200,000 square feet of warehouse space, we recognize the importance of operating as efficiently as possible, for the environment’s sake. We are exploring several areas to cut down on carbon emissions and improve resource efficiency across our supply chain.

2018 U.S. Food Waste Summit 

Tuesday, June 26th - Wednesday, June 27 

Thomas McQuillan, Baldor’s Director of Food Service Sales and Sustainability will sit on the panel at the Food Waste Reduction in Action Session. The session will explore the role of the business sector in accelerating food waste reduction.
