News on what's affecting markets in April

Basil

Basil

Basil supply is extremely tight across all regions and pack sizes. Heavy rains and flooding in Hawaii have disrupted supply, and Colombia is also experiencing weather that has sharply reduced availability. Supplies from Israel and Palestine are still constrained, with disruptions to flights ongoing. Expect challenging conditions to persist at least until mid-April.

Artichokes

Artichokes

Expect tight supply and strong artichoke markets for through Easter. Small loose chokes are nearly unavailable; large loose are limited. As fields transition from Coachella/Mexico to Oxnard and Castroville over the next four weeks, all sizes will continue to tighten.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes

The impact of the early 2026 freeze across Florida, a major winter tomato supplier, continues to be felt across the tomato category. Expect elevated prices and constrained supply—especially with Roma and round tomatoes—through April and potentially into May.

Veal

Veal

The U.S. veal market is historically tight. The national cattle herd has hit its lowest point since 1951, and a shift toward beef-bull breeding on dairy farms has sharply reduced calf availability. Prices are up  year-over-year, with no meaningful relief expected this year. Plan accordingly.

Topo Chico

Topo Chico

Topo Chico's classic glass bottles are facing a U.S. shortage through summer 2026. Coca-Cola, which acquired the brand in 2017, has paused production at its Monterrey facility for quality-related upgrades and well maintenance. Supply is expected to return later in the year.
