Also known as tree tomatoes. These smooth-skinned, red, oval fruits were native to South America and now come from New Zealand. Because they're too tart to eat raw, tamarillos are usually cooked into relishes, chutneys, jams or sauces for meats. You can also puree the flesh with apple juice and brown sugar to pour over fresh fruit, sponge cake and ice cream.
