Baldor event promotes new website, local produce

Doug Ohlemeier May 21 , 2015

Baldor Specialty Foods Inc., promoted the company’s new website by rolling out the red carpet for foodservice and retail buyers during a customer appreciation event.

More than 500 people attended the May 18 “Think Global, Source Local” evening in Manhattan where the New York-based wholesaler debuted its website and showed customers how use the site to improve ordering of local and regional produce.

The redesigned site automates the ordering process and allows buyers to view product inventory in real-time, said Mike Muzyk, president.

“Our customers walked away realizing and accepting that in the farm-to-fork equation, we are not the farm or the fork,” he said. “We are the conduit between the farm and the fork. This website was built by and for the industry as we relied heavily on their input. Part of the excitement of the site is that chefs get to define what local is, via farms, an entire state or in radius in miles.”

The site features products and information from more than 80 farms and 4,000 items and includes information on seasonal availability, weather patterns, product origination, growers and growing practices and specialty items, according to a news release.

Baldor plans to donate a portion of online sales to Edible Schoolyard NYC, which provides students access to healthy food.

Baldor distributes produce to foodservice and retail customers throughout the Eastern Seaboard.
