Manhattan neighborhoods received the most social distancing complaints — again

Neighborhoods in Manhattan received the most social distancing complaints of any borough for the third weekend in a row, according to city data analyzed by Patch. The city received more than 745 complaints in Manhattan since NYC restaurants and bars reopened for outdoor dining on June 22, though it’s not clear how many of these complaints were made specifically about people hanging out at restaurants and bars. Brooklyn followed close behind with 604 complaints.

New Yorkers have reported roughly 2,400 social distancing violations since the start of NYC’s phase two of reopening on June 22, according to Patch. An additional 2,500 reports were made during the two preceding weekends, with the bulk of those violations occurring in Manhattan neighborhoods like the West Village, Upper East Side, and Soho. Astoria and Bay Ridge, two popular dining destinations, were also in the top five at that time.

Those numbers — coupled with a surge in novel coronavirus cases nationwide — has prompted public officials to follow the example of city leaders in other states and postpone NYC’s return to indoor dining indefinitely. In cities like Los Angeles, officials have ordered dining rooms to close for the next three weeks. Meanwhile, restaurants and bars in Miami will close for everything but takeout and delivery service this week after reopening for outdoor dining in late May.
