The Pepino melon, pronounced Pep-EEno, is wrapped in an ivory to light green smooth sleek edible skin that is streaked with purple or mauve markings. Turning gold and orange when ripe, its interior has edible soft seeds. Not consistent in size, this melon can be as small as a plum or as large as an oversized papaya. Not only having an appearance of an eggplant, its flavor can often have a bitter bite just like that of an eggplant. Entirely edible, skin and all, its tender yellowish-gold pulp is fine-grained and sweetly aromatic, intensifying as it ripens. Some fans describe its flavor as a gentle mix of a banana and a pear. Others say it tastes somewhat like a mild cantaloupe.
